My great aunt Petronia Uknavage married in to the Galesky family so they are not directly related to me but I have some photos and a bit of information about the family which I will post here. Most of the information was provided by Helen Galesky Kenney, the only daughter of Petronia Uknavage Galesky and Joseph Galesky.

Joseph's parents were Michael and Christina Galesky. Michael was born in February 1840. His wife, Christina was born in December of 1836. They married in 1867 and immigrated to the U. S. from Lithuania in 1881. The census for 1900 found them living on 29th Street in the 14th ward of Detroit, MI with their 19 year old daughter , Margaret , and a 5 year-old-boy named Joseph Bormisky (sp?) who was born in Michigan and is listed as "adopted son."

Michael and Christina had three sons - all older than their sister Margaret - Frank, Joseph, and William. I have photos shown above. Helen told us that William passed away in Horwich, England. As you can see in one of my photos, Frank Galesky had at least one son. The 1910 census has Frank living in a boarding house at 254 State Street, Westville, Vermilion County, Illinois. He was 25 years old and single. Interestly, another boarder was Louis Mosteiko, 21 years old and single. Louis would later marry Frances Uknavage, the sister of Petronia who married Frank Galesky's brother, Joseph.

Joseph and Petronia in 1930 lived in Detroit, MI, the 16th precinct, block 938. The actual address was 5352 Sieboldt St. I believe they moved to that address in approx. 1916. In 1930 Joseph was 53 yrs. old which would put his birthdate at 1877. He was born in Lithuania and immigrated to the U. S. in 1895. Petronia was 41 years old. They were married in 1904. Their children were Joseph A. Galesky born in 1908, William J. Galesky born in 1909, Frank B. Galesky born in 1911, Helen Galesky born in May 17, 1914, and Louis Galesky born in 1917. The census says that all the children except Louis were born in Illinois. Louis was born in Michigan. This census says that Petronia was born in Pennsylvania yet all previous records state she was born in Lithuania. I'm certain she was born in Lithuania. The father Joseph and sons William and Frank worked as machinists in an automobile factory. Son Joseph worked as a truck driver for a grocery store.

Petronia died in 1936 at the age of 48. I don't know when the father, Joseph, died or when the son Joseph died (I found one online record of a Joseph A. Goleski born in 1908 who died in 1995 in Minneapolis but don't know if this the right person.) Louis died in 1972 at the age of 55. Frank died in 1983 at the age of 72. Helen died June 2, 1988 in Florida at the age of 74.

There may be errors in the above information. I am always interested in additional information about this family. If you would like to add any information or correct something here, please email me at pamruss@frii.com
