Mosteiko Family

My father's aunt Frances Uknavage married in to the Mosteiko family when she and Luidvidas (Louis) Mosteiko married in 1913 in Westville, Illinois. They didn't have any children and I might not have known anything at all about Louis' family had it not been for my sister, Kathy Hillary, and her search for family history.

In the mid 1980's before Internet searches were available Kathy found the name of Louis' brother, Frank Mosteiko, in a phone book and she wrote to him. Frank was about 90 years old then, living in Detroit, Michigan, and hadn't lived in Westville for over 40 years but he remembered his sister-in-law, Frances, and led Kathy to Frances' sister Petronia in Detroit, Michigan. Actually, Petronia was no longer living but her daughter, Helen Kenney, was. Kathy and Helen struck up a friendship and exchanged photographs and information - what a bonanza.

Almost 20 years after Frank Mosteiko and Kathy exchanged letters two of Frank's young relatives found my website and provided me with a lot of information about the Mosteiko family. I will post that information here. I also have found a little bit of Mosteiko family information in census reports and other public records.

The 1910 census finds Louis Mosteiko living in a boarding house owned by a German family, the P. John Possolt family, at 254 State Street, Westville, Illinois. His date of immigration to the U. S. is shown as 1902. He was 21 years old and single.

Frank Mosteiko, one of Louis' brothers, was born February 2, 1894 in Lithuania, the State of Kaunas, County Raseinie, City of Raceiniu, birth place Polimi on a farm. He immigrated to the U. S. in 1910.

Frank and Louis had two sisters, Anna Mosteiko Savicky, and Josephine Mosteiko Bukouski, both of whom lived either in Westville, IL or Detroit, MI.

The parents of these Mosteiko siblings were Vincentus Mosteiko and Petrunella Lapa Mosteiko, both of Lithuania. I don't know the year they immigrated and have not found their names in any ship's passenger list.

As for continuing their lineage, Louis and Frances didn't have any children. Frank and his wife, Sarah Stanakauskas Mosteiko had one son, Edward. Josephine and her husband had one son, Joseph. I don't know if Anna Savicky and her husband had any children.

I have photographs of Louis and Frances, and a good photo of Sarah but the only photo of Frank is the top of his head. I also have a fairly good photo of Ann Savicky. These are scattered throughout my website.

There may be errors in the above information. I am always interested in additional information about this family. If you would like to add any information or correct something here, please email me at pamruss@frii.com
