Grandma died the summer of 1971 so wouldn't she be surprised to know she now has her own website, a place to tell her story and display her quilts. Born in 1893 in Webster County, Kentucky, Verla Leona Doss, affectionately known as Verlie, was the sixth child of eight born to Nancy Lougena Woosley Doss and her husband, George Samuel Doss. But this isn't about genealogy, or how Verla and her husband, Wil Smith, raised seven children to adulthood during hard times, low pay, miner's wages. Rather it is about the legacy she left in the lovely, handmade quilts she created during those hard times and how they've survived as a tangible link to this woman we love, our grandma.
