His first wife was Sarah J. Brammer with whom he fathered eight children.

Eliza Jane Holcroft was born March 13, 1867 in Missouri

James and Eliza married November 12, 1887 in Millard, Adair County, Missouri

Their daughter Nora Olive Jones was the mother of our Frances Smith Russell. Nora died shortly after giving birth to Frances. Weakened by the effort of giving birth, she succumbed to the Spanish Flu of 1918, the epidemic that claimed approx. forty million lives worldwide. That figure I found in Gina Kolata’s book “Flu – The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for Virus That Caused It.”
